What Is the Legal Definition of a Godparent
The church said the original purpose of appointing sponsors — to serve as religious mentors for children — has lost its spiritual significance and instead becomes „a networking opportunity for families looking to improve their happiness.“ In the Yoruba Santería religion, godparents must have completed their Santo or Ifá. A person gets his Madrina and Yubona (co-godmother) or his Padrino and Yubon (co-godmother). A Santero, apart from his co-sponsors, may have an oluo (babalawo, initiate of ifa) who consults him with an ekuele (divinatory chain). In some Catholic and Orthodox countries, particularly in Southern Europe, Latin America and the Philippines, the relationship between parents and godparents was considered particularly important and distinctive. [41] These relationships create mutual obligations and responsibilities that can be socially beneficial to participants. The Portuguese and Spanish compadre (literally „co-father“) and comadre („co-mother“), the French godmother and godfather, and the archaic meaning of the English word gossip (from godsib, „godsbling“), describe these relationships. [42] In a broader sense, they can also be used to describe a friendship. I am pleased to inform you that, for the first time, a wonderful family in my ward 🥰 has asked me to be a sponsor, once you have decided who you want to appoint as your legal guardian, you should make them aware of their role. (When you create a will through Fabric, you can share important information with the people you choose so that your guardians have their own credentials to see their role in your will.) The sponsor must be a Catholic who is at least 16 years old and has received the sacraments of baptism, reconciliation, holy communion and confirmation. You cannot be the mother or father of the baby.
Godparents must not be bound by canonical punishment. They must have a desire to be godparents and be willing to teach the child the faith if necessary. With regard to the first requirement, that a sponsor must be Catholic, there is an exception. For a good reason, it is permissible to accept the Christian faithful of another Eastern Catholic Church as godfather, but always at the same time as a Catholic godfather. This means that a Ukrainian Catholic can have a Russian Orthodox godfather, provided that there is a good reason for this (family relationship) and that he also has another Catholic godfather. In some denominations of Christianity, when a child is baptized, he or she is sponsored by (usually two) adults who promise to help in this way. These adults are the child`s godparents, and the child is their godson. In some Christian denominations, at child baptism, people officially become godparents of their godson by making specific promises to help them in their religious education. However, some parents choose godparents for their child by simply asking them to have a special presence in their godson`s life (and often act as the child`s guardian if something happens to them).
This may or may not include a religious aspect. Many people choose very trustworthy and beloved friends as godparents and might assume that these are the people who would take care of their children if something happened to them. In Roman Catholic Church practices, a child may have two godparents, a man and a woman, as godparents. Godparents serve as official witnesses that the child has been baptized. A document called a baptismal certificate, which is issued when a child is baptized in church, lists the names of godparents. In the Church of England, the godmother is the baby`s godmother at baptism, answering the child`s questions about his faith and guiding him on a moral path as he grows. Many people assume that their child`s godmother has the power to raise them and the responsibility to take care of them in case they die or become unable to work. This is not the case according to the law, since the relationship between godmother and godson is religious and not legal. If your children have good sponsors who you think could also be good guardians one day, you should think about it. Just because someone is a loving sponsor doesn`t necessarily mean they have the organizational and financial skills desirable in a tutor. In 2015, the Vatican declared that transgender Catholics cannot become godparents, stating in response to a transgender man`s question that transgender status „publicly reveals an attitude contrary to the moral imperative to resolve the problem of sexual identity according to the truth of one`s sexuality“ and that „it is therefore obvious that this person does not have the requirement of a life according to faith and in the position of godfather and cannot so not be accepted in the position of godfather.
[40] The Orthodox sponsorship institution is the least affected by the changes. In some Orthodox churches (Serbian, Greek), the best man (kum, кум, koumbaros) or bridesmaid (kuma, кума, kumbar) usually act as godfather for the first or all of the children of the marriage at a couple`s wedding. In some cases, the sponsor is responsible for the child`s name. A sponsor of a child then acts as a godfather upon the child`s marriage. [32] Godparents are expected to have a good reputation in the Orthodox Church, including their divorce judgments, and to be aware of the importance and responsibility of their role. [33] You cannot be a minor or parent of the child, and at least one companion must be Orthodox. Being named godmother of a friend`s baby is an honor, but while it may confer religious responsibilities, it does not confer legal rights. A sponsor has no more rights than other members of the general public when it comes to making binding decisions on behalf of the child.
